There’s just something special about autumn here. The air is crisp, the colours are bright and beautiful, and the comfortable temperatures make exploring the city that much more enjoyable. There may be no better time to visit, and enjoy the undeniable charms of the area. Planning a visit in the coming months? We think that’s a great idea. And here’s just some of what you can look forward to this fall in Victoria, BC.

Visit Butchart Gardens

Butchart Gardens is a stunning sunken arboretum, landscaped to perfection and featuring countless varieties of beautiful botanical species over several themed areas. The always-beautiful gardens become even more so during the fall season, as the trees positively explode into ground-level fireworks displays of brilliant colour, filling the 55-acre space with amazing harvest hues. Guests can enjoy strolling among 900-plus varieties of botanical life, visiting more than two dozen greenhouses, and even stopping in for a bite at the café.

Enjoy High Tea

In many ways, Victoria still embraces the traditions that were prevalent during the time of our royal namesake. As such, there are many spots in the city where visitors and residents are welcome to experience a British-style high tea with all the trimmings. And what better time of year to sit and sip a warm, comforting beverage and watch the stunning scenery than a crisp autumn day? Some of our favourite spots to enjoy this elegant affair include The Teahouse at Abkhazi Garden, Pendray Tea House, and White Heather Tea Room.

Visit the Royal BC Museum

First founded in 1886, the Royal BC Museum in Victoria is one of the city’s finest cultural treasures. The museum’s current collection consists of: Natural History, Broken Promises, Canada—Here We Are, and more. Each focuses on an important part of the story of Canada, as well as our province. All told, the museum houses more than seven million objects spread across countless exhibits, so there’s always something new to see.

Sip and Savour The City’s Wine Scene

You might not expect as much, but the rich soil and temperate climate here have spurred many area vineyards into crafting some truly excellent wines! If you’re interested in sampling a snifter or two of our local flavour, then you have some very tasty options. Local tour companies offer Cowichan Valley vineyard packages that hit some tasty highlights. However, if you’re striking out on your own, we recommend trying out the family-operated Unsworth Vineyards, which boasts an on-site restaurant and tasting room. Tugwell Creek Farm and Meadery is another fantastic stop for honey liqueur.

Experience Local History

As one of the most storied cities in Canada, Victoria’s rich history is one of the best reasons to visit. A great place to start is by visiting the impressive Parliamentary Buildings, British Columbia’s seat of government. From there, you may want to embark on a castle tour. The famous and impressive edifices of Craigdarroch Castle and Hatley Castle welcome visitors on regular schedules for tours and more. And if you happen to be visiting any time close to Halloween, then you’ll definitely want to explore Victoria’s reputation as “Canada’s Most Haunted City” by taking a spooky ghost tour.

Pedal the Galloping Goose Trail

There’s no better way to watch the fall leaves change colour than on a bicycle. Perhaps that’s why a spirited ride along the lovely Galloping Goose is such a popular autumnal activity. The 55-km (34-mile) trail once served as a railway line, but has since been converted to a hiking and biking trail. Along its length, it passes through Sooke, Metchosin, Colwood, Langford, View Royal, Saanich and Victoria, affording an absolutely stunning pastoral pedal promenade along the way. So grab one of our complimentary bikes, and enjoy the trip!

Check Out Inner Harbour

Victoria’s Inner Harbour is in many ways the heart of the city. This charming seafront enclave overlooks the marina, and is home to countless unique local shops, attractions, eateries and other can’t-miss points of interest. While here, don’t miss stopping by Fisherman's Wharf, where colourful houseboats bob in the gentle waves, and fresh seafood is always available — both in shops and in some of Victoria’s best restaurants.
